Fresh off his layoff from Corporate America, the man better known as Calvin Murrell utilized a minor step-back as a major step forward, as he began a career in real estate that would not only lead him closer to his true calling, but also give him much needed game and on the job training.
The saga begins…
A fact worth mentioning is that while Mr. Murrell had to tend to business matters in the city of Trenton, NJ, his best friends of 7+ years were across town planting the seeds of a music machine in the making.
Hustle Emcee is born…
While commuting back and forth between Old Bridge, New Brunswick, Trenton and the Willingboro/Burlington NJ areas, the native Brooklynite patch-worked a wealthy catalogue of freestyles and conceptual material that would later be compiled as the aptly titled, Soul of Hip-Hop. However, before completing the Soul, Hustle Emcee helped shape, record and distribute Mind On Money Presents: The Green Party. Green Party vol. 1 featured not only some of the earliest recordings of Hustle, but also his label mates Sport and Jema (aka The Bleus Bros) in the collaborative sense.
Flash forward, the Green Party showcased Hustle's ability to mesh well with a diverse cast of players in a team effort, but also showed Calvin's growth as an entrepreneur with his willingness to take on another hat…that of an executive producer and general make-it-happen man. Distributing the effort amongst his network of supporters and utilizing the same technological devices that once provided his living as an employee, Hustle kicked it into overdrive with the campaign release for the Soul of Hip-Hop. Regional graffiti artist-extraordinaire and long time buddy Will Kasso would assist the promotion of the project with a mural at the neighboring Terra-Cycle. Said venue where Hustle once performed as a member of the Green Party for the New Jersey Fresh Festival, is an annual free celebration of various hip-hop art forms in unison.
Death comes in 3's…
After ping-ponging between life as an investor and real estate professional, the very industry that once appeared to be a bustling bevy of prospects for aspiring youth, abruptly transitioned into an industry at the center of a nation undergoing major reform. Hustle found himself once again back at the drawing board. This time, however, he was even more skilled with use of a pen. Stronger at expressing himself in part due to the recent loss of several loved ones, both too young and by natural causes, Hustle unleashed a fury on wax that would spellbound his partners-in-rhyme, as he devoted his total being into the music and killed himself as a part-time MC.
More resilient and better equipped to deal with the pressures associated with the ups and downs that come along with forging a new enterprise in an uncertain marketplace, Calvin Murrell aka Hustle Emcee decided that he and his team would not fall to the same fate as some of the companies he previously worked for. No. Instead, they would learn and apply everything they learned about their craft and industry. A by-product of their rearing together in the collegiate atmosphere of the capital city's College of New Jersey, these students of game began to sharpen up their business endeavors and ramp up production organically. Another aspect of Mind On Money's operations that Hustle directly impacts is the fledgling company's thirst to be politically connected and in the know. A proud member of the world's largest student run organization, the National Society of Black Engineer's (NSBE), Hustle positioned himself and his unit amongst the power brokers and consumer advocacy groups of the music biz with the same efficacy he utilized to obtain a nationally ranking position with NSBE during his undergraduate years.
Slated for release fourth quarter 2010 is Hustle Emcee's prequel to his yet untitled retail CD on Mind On Money Entertainment. Groomed during the era when a mixtape was still a tape, preferably a hi-bias dub, and with tracks cut over the past year in the life and times of Calvin Murrell, we present to you Hustle Emcee.
